Alarming Rise in Gray Whale Deaths Trigger Global Investigation
An increase in gray whale strandings has resulted in NOAA Fisheries declaring the onset of a 2019 Unusual Mortality Event (UME). U.S. and Canadian scientists announced the unusual call last Friday, explaining more resources in terms of funding, research, and collaboration with other countries will be forthcoming as a result of the designation.
Already 70 gray whales have been found -- most showing signs of malnutrition and some described as "emaciated" -- along the beaches of California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska. Another 73 deaths have been reported this season in the lagoons...
